Mandarin Reading and Writing for Children

Our specialised Mandarin Reading and Writing course targets elements of Chinese language learning that are often perceived as higher difficulty and explores them in an immersive and effective manner to enable students to master them.

Reading and Writing
On

The Star Mandarin School strives to build a community of enthusiastic readers, emphasising the importance of reading and writing for parents and students alike.

Learning to read and write is crucial for developing literacy in Chinese, building on the foundation of oral language skills. These abilities enable children to represent their lived experiences through writing and symbols and this ability is linked to stronger problem-solving skills, an improved attention span, and the reduction of anxiety throughout their lives. In addition, reading and writing skills are proven to improve career prospects and quality of life in later years, especially for those who are bilingual.

Research-informed approach

Our classes focus on enhancing language skills such as vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and spoken language. Teachers use research-based methods to show how words create meaning and understanding.

Variety of text styles and inspirations

Students will explore a variety of texts such as books, poems, plays, and genres like fiction and journalism. We will encourage our students to find pleasure in reading, to help them develop a lifelong love of reading, as well as heightened emotional wellbeing and empathy.

Beginners to Intermediate levels

Ideal for children aged 6 and above

These classes focus on clear goals with pre-taught key vocabulary, phrases, idioms, and grammar. Teachers demonstrate skills needed for reading comprehension and writing and explore stories together throughout reading and writing classes.. Independent activities are also planned to practise the skills consisting of recognising and spelling Chinese characters.  Activities include recognizing and spelling Chinese characters, understanding short stories, and composing sentences.

Advanced levels

Designed for students who have completed Textbook Zhongwen 9 or possess a vocabulary of 800 Chinese characters (HSK 3/4 equivalent).

This course aims to enhance and improve literacy in Mandarin Chinese and seeks to complement other studies in language. The course addresses the fact that bilingual children experience a significant gap in their educational development in comparison to non-bilingual children in terms of literary development. Students will work with graded reading materials, Chinese classics, and digital resources to expand their vocabulary and writing skills.
