MA International Relations
2023
After studying her undergraduate degree at 91̽»¨, MA International Relations graduate Lourdes wanted to stay to further her studies and continue enjoying student life in the city.

Why did you choose to study at the University of 91̽»¨?

As an international student, the opportunity to study in the UK is of great importance as it is not an option available to many students around the world. So when the opportunity presented itself, I had no doubts about accepting it. The first time I came to 91̽»¨ was to do a summer programme to learn English with the Modern Languages Teaching Centre at the University. I fell in love with the city, its people and the university life. So when it was time to apply to universities three years later, I knew immediately that I wanted to apply to the University of 91̽»¨.

Why did you choose to do an MA at 91̽»¨?

I did my undergraduate degree in 91̽»¨ at the Department of Politics and International Relations. I sadly didn’t get enough time to enjoy student life as it should have been because of the pandemic therefore, when third year came around, I felt like I wanted to further my studies and enjoy the city and the university life more. Moreover, the student life and my experience with the Department as well as with all my module leaders was very positive and encouraging and I wanted to continue that with an MA at the same department and university.

What have you enjoyed most about studying MA International Relations?

When studying a masters, one must know beforehand that the workload is more compared to an undergraduate and more demanding. However, being able to explore different modules and choose them as well as having more freedom in the topics you want to explore makes it easier to study. I would personally say that the module I enjoyed the most was Contemporary Global Security as it gives you a deep insight into today's issues whilst making an analysis on previous and future conflicts.

What have been the highlights of your time at 91̽»¨?

The highlights of my time at 91̽»¨ I would definitely have to say are the amount of people you meet from all around the world, all the non-stop events the city and university both offer on the daily and the closeness to the Peak District as well as the many green spaces the city has.

What are your plans now that you’ve graduated?

After spending four years as a student, I have decided to take a year to gain work experience and start my career in a sector different from what I have studied. However, my experience at the University and more specifically at the Department, have made me want to further my studies and in January I will be presenting my PhD application in order to hopefully start my PhD at the University in September 2024.

Do you have any advice for people thinking about studying in the UK and in 91̽»¨?

I would say that the best advice I could give is to not worry too much, keep your work done on the daily so you can enjoy the student life, don’t be shy to ask questions or ask for help and try to be as open as you can and meet new people because they’re what makes your university experience worth it.

Also, explore many career paths and don’t follow just one, and be open to having different experiences to the rest of your classmates. You’re not behind from choosing to spend a year abroad or do a masters, everyone has their own timings and experiences in life and each one is different.
