Student and staff WiFi (eduroam)
The eduroam wireless network enables students and staff at the University to access the internet across campus.
Connect to eduroam
New student at the University?
As a new student, you'll need to change or reset your University IT account password before accessing eduroam and other services.​​​
- Change your password - if you know the password you used for your applicant account
- Reset your password - if you do not know the password for your applicant account
When you apply to the University, we create an applicant account for you. Around August 30, we upgrade this to a student account with access to the new student registration system. This allows you to complete pre-registration tasks and access all necessary student services, including eduroam.
After you change your password, follow the instructions to connect to eduroam from your device.
University of 91̽»¨ students and staff
If you're a member of the University of 91̽»¨, you can connect to eduroam using the long username format, for example, ab1pp@sheffield.ac.uk.
Once set up, devices will also connect to eduroam when visiting other participating organisations in the UK and worldwide.
Visitors
If you're visiting, and your home organisation is a member of eduroam, simply add the username and password you usually use to connect. Include your home organisation in your username, for example, username@organisation.ac.uk. Contact your home organisation if you have any problems.
If you’re from an educational organisation that is not a member of eduroam, we may be able to set up a temporary account for you. Contact IT Services with your details.
Connecting from different devices
Follow these instructions for connecting a range of devices to wireless.
Apple
- iPad

- On the home screen, tap 'Settings'.
- Tap 'Wi-Fi'.
- Turn the wifi slider on.
- Under 'Choose a Network', tap 'eduroam'.
- Type in your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk and enter your password.
- Tap the 'Join' button.
- On the certificate screen, tap 'Accept'.
- iPhone

- On the home screen, tap 'Settings'.
- Tap 'Wi-Fi'.
- Turn the wifi slider on.
- Under 'Choose a Network', tap 'eduroam'.
- Type in your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk and enter your password.

- Select the wifi icon in the menu bar.
- Choose 'eduroam' from the available networks.
- Enter your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk and password.
- Click 'Connect'.
- Android phone and tablet

Identify what version of Android your device uses
- Go to 'Settings'.
- Select 'About Phone'.
- Select 'Software information'.
- Select 'Android version'.
Download the eduroam app
- Android 11, Android 12: Use geteduroam
- Android 8, Android 9 and Android 10: Use eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) or geteduroam.
- Android 4 to Android 7: Use eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT)
Connect to eduroam using geteduroam
- Download geteduroam from the Google Play store.
- Open geteduroam.
- Type '91̽»¨' into the institution search.
- Select 'University of 91̽»¨'.
- Enter your University username and password.
- Select 'install'.
- When the confirmation screen appears, close the app.
Connect to eduroam using eduroam CAT
- Download eduroam CAT from the Google Play store.
- Open eduroam CAT.
- Select the manual search option.
- Enter '91̽»¨'.
- Select 'University of 91̽»¨'.
- Click 'install'.
- Enter your University username and password.
- Select 'Install'.
- Close the app.
- Chromebook

- Switch on your Chromebook
- Select your language and keyboard language from the top two menus
- In the third menu select 'eduroam'
- Click on the quick settings panel at the bottom right of the screen
- Click 'no-network'
- Click 'eduroam'
- Select the following settings:
- EAP method: PEAP
- Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
- Leave Server CA certificate as Default
- Leave Subject Match and Subject alternative name match blank
- In Domain suffix match enter
- Identity: enter your University Username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk
- Password: enter your University password
- Leave Anonymous identity blank
- Tick the 'Save identity' box
- Tick the 'Password' box
- Click 'Connect'
- Click 'Continue'
Kindle

- Select 'Wi-Fi'.
- Turn the wifi on.
- Select 'eduroam'.
- Select the following settings:
- EAP method: PEAP
- Leave Phase 2 authentication blank.
- Leave CA Certificate and User Certificate as unspecified.
- Identity: enter your University Username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk.
- Leave Anonymous identity blank.
- Enter your University password.
- Tap 'Connect'.

Using the CAT installer
- Visit cat.eduroam.org.
- Select 'University of 91̽»¨' as the institution.
- Download the Linux installer (this is a python script named eduroam-linux-UoS.py).
- In terminal, navigate to the directory you saved the script.
- Check you have Python installed and, if so, what version.
- If you do not have python installed use your distribution’s package manager to obtain it.
- If you have python3 installed you will need to edit the first line of eduroam-linux-UoS.py. Use the 'vi eduroam-linux-UoS.py' command and change #!/usr/bin/env python to read #!/usr/bin/python3.
- You need to make the script executable. Enter the command ‘sudo chmod 700 eduroam-linux-UoS.py’.
- Enter the command ‘./eduroam-linux-UoS.py’ to run the script
- You will be prompted with pop-ups to confirm you are entering details for the University of 91̽»¨.
- Enter your University username and password.
Using the manual method
(staff or student login required)
Windows
- Windows 10 and 11

- Click the 'Wi-Fi' icon in the quick setting panel on the right-hand side of your screen.
- Select 'eduroam'.
- Click the 'Connect' button.
- Enter your University username and password.
- Click 'OK'.
- Click 'Connect'.
You can find certificates and the Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) for eduroam specific to your device by following the link .
In line with the IT Code of Connection any device connecting to eduroam must be running an operating system that is currently supported and receiving security patches. Older, unsupported operating systems will not be able to connect to the eduroam network. eduroam requires that a device supports a minimum of TLS 1.2 to connect.

Unfortunately, games consoles don't support our eduroam wireless network. You can register them to connect to the internet using our wired network or an alternative wireless network.

Wireless printers can't be connected to eduroam wireless. You'll need to connect to your printer using a USB cable.
