Academic and practice backgrounds

Many of our students come from backgrounds in planning, the built environment disciplines, geography or from social sciences like politics. We are happy to consider applicants from beyond these disciplines who have a strong interest in geographical or urban issues.

We also recognise the value of practice-based experience, and will consider candidates with substantial experience but less in the way of academic qualifications.

Qualifications required

Each application is assessed individually, but as a minimum we normally require:

  • at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree in geography, urban studies/planning or a cognate discipline.
    • Offers to final year undergraduates are conditional on this requirement.
  • a masters degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate field. We would normally expect the masters degree to be at Merit level or above.
    • A masters degree would be an asset to an application, but this is not a necessary criterion.

International applicants

If English is not your first language or you do not possess a degree taught in the English language, there are minimum English language requirements. If you are yet to fulfil these requirements, they will be made conditions of any offer made.

You can find more detailed information about your specific entry requirements on our list of countries.
