Bedrock
The geology of the Don catchment varies considerably.
The map below shows the underlying bedrock of the catchment, mainly comprised of mudstone and sandstone, but with strips of limestone and dolomite in the eastern reaches.
Soil type
The map below shows the distribution of different soil types within the Don catchment. Soil categories have been simplified for ease of interpretation, ie all 'loam' categories have been merged.
Of particular interest are the restored areas in the south of the catchment. These areas were restored after industrial activity, such as iron working, ceased.
