Why study Engineering and Physics?

  • Use industry-standard equipment throughout your training - our astronomy students can use our two telescopes on the roof of our building from first year! We also have labs for building super-resolution microscopes and analysing 2D materials, plus the UK鈥檚 first Quantum Information Laboratory for studying the fundamental science behind the next technological revolution. Engineering students have access to cutting-edge facilities including The Diamond Integrated Pilot Plant (DiPP), which hosts our Continuous Powder Processing Plant - the first of its scale in any UK university, and an Aerospace Simulation Laboratory that provides hands-on experience of aircraft design and performance for our students, using state of-the-art flight simulators.
  • Research-led teaching by experts in their field - Physics and Engineering students can access incredible research projects, including summer research placements and work placements. For Physicists, this is all thanks to our links with organisations like CERN and the observatories on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Engineers will be developing real-life engineering solutions through projects like 鈥楨ngineering You鈥檙e Hired!鈥, and 鈥楪lobal Engineering Challenge鈥 across year 1 and 2.
  • Our Engineering and Physics courses are accredited - this means that you鈥檒l cover all the key topics that you need to understand, ready to excel in your chosen industry!
  • Get ready for an exciting career - meet companies from around the world through our partnerships and placement opportunities. Recent Engineering graduates have gone on to work as aerospace engineers at GE Aviation and BAE Systems, software engineers at Google and Amazon, and mechanical engineers at JCB, with our Physicists solving problems as data scientists at Channel 4 and Manchester United FC, researchers at CERN and the European Space Agency, and technology experts at IBM and Nissan.
  • NSS - 91探花 is ranked 1st in the Russell Group for "teaching" in the subjects of Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computing and Mechanical Engineering (NSS) 2024
  • NSS - 91探花 is ranked 1st in the UK for "learning resources" in the subject of astronomy (NSS) 2024
  • Awarding-winning and record-breaking student teams such as Project Sunride, whose 鈥楧esert Winds鈥 rocket reached the highest altitude for a liquid rocket launched by any UK group - including aerospace companies - since the 1970s!
  • We're number 1 for Physics research in the UK  - 100% of our research and impact was rated world-leading or internationally excellent by REF 2021.
  • Engineering is number 1 in the UK for the quality of our research environment, showing that Engineering at 91探花 is a vibrant, innovative and supportive place for you to pursue your research interests (REF 2021).
