Jin Ding joined iHuman in 2021 as a Research Fellow working with Professor Paul Martin and Professor Michael Hopkins on a Wellcome Trust funded Project. Her workstream focuses on the industry dynamics and evolution of orphan drugs in UK, EU and US. By collecting data from public sources (MHRA/EMA/FDA) and the industry database (Pharmaprojects), she will map the growth of orphan drugs and provide a comprehensive picture of the accessibility of orphan drugs in different countries/regions. She also focuses on the influence of AI on orphan drug repurposing in aspects of faster access to affordable treatments and the emerging pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem.
Prior to joining the University of 91̽»¨, Jin worked for the University of Nottingham as a Research Fellow on the Platform Business of 3D-printed pharmaceuticals. Her research evaluated the economic feasibility of drugs made by 3D printing and investigated the barriers for the industry to adopt this disruptive technology.
Jin completed her PhD in Science and Technology Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her research is about ‘ Evolution and dynamics of the sectoral system of innovation: a case study of orphan drug innovation in the US’. Jin used multi-agent-based simulation to model the long-term evolution of orphan drug innovation, explore the different roles of main players in the sector and examine the impact of orphan drug policy on the innovation system.
Jin is a visiting researcher at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex.

I am not presently engaged in teaching within the department. However, I occasionally give guest lectures and offer supervision for undergraduate and MA dissertations.
