Profile

I joined ScHARR in 2013 as a University Teacher in Health Services research. My first degree was a BSc (physiotherapy), following which I completed an MPH at the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. I began my academic career as a researcher within the Women’s Health Research Unit, UCT, before working as a research manager for a non-governmental organisation in South Africa.

My teaching career also began at UCT, where I taught in the Master of Public Health programme. Since moving to the University of 91̽»¨, I have been involved in teaching and research and completed my PhD, an NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) funded project and explored migrants’ use of paediatric emergency departments in the north of England.

Since 2021 I have been the Deputy Director of Education in Population Health and provide education leadership within the school and across the Faculty of Health. I was appointed Deputy Faculty Director of Education – Student Experience, in January 2023. The specific focus of this role is to enhance student experience across the Faculty of Health.

Research interests

My research interests are primarily around the utilization of healthcare services by vulnerable population groups. I have experience in using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches.

Teaching interests

My teaching is driven by a personal commitment to creating a positive learning experience for my students. Through my teaching, supervision, and personal tutoring roles, I aim to help prepare students for their onward careers and further study aspirations.

My teaching practice extends to supporting and mentoring teaching staff in Population Health - particularly teams of staff who tutor on the modules I lead and supervise dissertation students. I play an active role in teaching development in the school and have been involved in curriculum redevelopment across our Masters programmes.

In 2022 I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Teaching activities
  • I am the Deputy Director of Education for Population Health.
  • I currently lead HAR6043 (Introduction to Research Methods online) and contribute to teaching across several other modules.
  • I tutor on the MBChB programme.
  • I supervise and examine dissertation projects and provide personal tutor support to students.
