Background to the programme and subject area The management of water resources and quality is fundamental to the sustainable development of modern society. This is combined with a responsibility to mitigate and manage the impact of urban development on our environment and water resources. The MSc in Water Engineering provides our students with the fundamental knowledge and experience of water engineering science and practice, including skills in water resource engineering, environmental enhancement and water protection. It covers underlying engineering principles such as fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology and hydrogeology, which are applied in critical areas of surface water, coastal and groundwater resource investigation, engineering, management and restoration. This ensures our graduates are equipped to tackle problems such as flooding, groundwater pollution and urban water systems infrastructure design and water quality management. The MSc covers a broad base of disciplines including hydrology, applied hydrogeology and hydraulic engineering. The course is delivered by a large, water research group. Our academic staff engages with industry and researchers all over the world on a wide variety of challenging problems in water supply, drainage and environmental protection. The research projects offered as part of this course reflect this diversity. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, 100% of our research was assessed as being 'recognised internationally' with 85% as being '3world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. The programme includes a portfolio of modules which ensure balanced training provision, covering fundamental theory and engineering applications in the respective subject areas that together comprise a full Masters Level curriculum. The programme is designed to facilitate part-time registration, as an alternative to full-time study. Programme structure and regulations The programme structure is modular and runs full-time for 12 months or part-time over two years. Full-time students study 60 credits per semester and, for an MSc, prepare a dissertation worth a further 60 credits. Apart from the dissertation, the programme comprises 15 credit modules, across both semesters.Some modules are assessed through coursework only, within the duration of the module. Students must initially complete a programme of compulsory modules, focused on theoretical aspects, before proceeding to select optional modules, covering engineering design and practical applications, for subsequent study. Student development over the course of study The structure of the programme, and the sequence of the modules, is designed to develop knowledge and skills progressively through the programme. Core subjects are studied in the first semester and start with a science and skills base in hydrology, fluid flow, water chemistry and environmental analysis. These modules aim to develop an advanced understanding of the chemical and physical properties of water and associated contaminants: their sources, movement and impacts in urban and rural environments. In subsequent engineering applications modules, studied primarily in the second semester, specialist knowledge and skills are developed relating to specific foci in the field of water engineering at a range of scales from the whole catchment to the detailed chemistry needed to understand the fate of pollutants in groundwater systems. These modules provide the practical, science-based training in the use of advanced problem-solving tools and theoretical principles for the assessment and management of water resources in different contexts. More importantly, these modules develop the conceptual and quantitative modelling skills that will allow participants to identify and assess future problems as they develop.
