Staff and students from the School of Journalism, Media and Communication have been shortlisted in a national industry awards scheme.

The National Council of Training for Journalists (NCTJ) has revealed the shortlist for its annual Awards for Excellence to be handed out early next year.

Judges have named the School鈥檚 Inclusive Voices project as one of three projects in the running for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion award.

The project was led by Lisa Bradley who recruited a team of students from diverse backgrounds to analyse the teaching materials across all courses to ensure they represented all voices. New module development procedures were put in place to ensure new teaching materials will always have inclusivity at the core.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Pantry鈥檚 virtual reality work in the classroom has also made it as one of the final three projects in the Innovation of the year category.

Using the WondaVR platform, Lindsay designed a virtual reality newsgathering exercise which saw students transported to the scene of a major breaking news event -and practise their crime reporting skills without leaving the safety of the newsroom.

Director of undergraduate studies, Lisa Bradley, said: 鈥淭hese are really big national awards and I'm delighted the School has been recognised in four different categories. We have a great track record, having won Innovation of the Year twice over the last three years and runner up in the third which is testament to the hard work and dedication of teaching specialists in the department to ensure we are keeping up this trend.鈥

Students Ruby Watson and Na Ao have also been shortlisted. Ruby in the News Journalism category and Na in Videojournalism.

Judges have shortlisted 72 students, trainees, apprentices and training providers in the 2024 Awards for Excellence.

More than 400 entries were received across 20 categories for the annual awards, which highlight the achievements of individuals with promising journalism careers ahead of them and those doing outstanding work in the media and training sector.
