Why did you decide to study abroad?
The opportunity to study abroad was incredibly appealing to me and played a crucial role in my decision to choose my course. It offered a valuable chance to gain international work experience, which is highly beneficial for my future career. Additionally, it provided an immersive environment to enhance my language proficiency far beyond what classroom learning alone could achieve. The prospect of experiencing a different culture and stepping out of my comfort zone was also incredibly exciting. I knew this enriching and challenging adventure would significantly contribute to my personal and professional growth.
What were your top 3 highlights whilst studying abroad?
Travelling: Despite working Monday to Friday and having only 11 days of personal leave, I managed to travel to several memorable destinations. I visited Milan, Lake Como, Malaga, and Valencia, as well as closer spots like Sitges and Costa Brava. However, my favourite travel experience was in Morocco, where I explored Marrakesh, slept in the Sahara Desert, rode camels, and ventured into the mountains. These travel experiences enriched my time abroad and allowed me to explore diverse cultures and landscapes.
New city, culture, and people: Living in Barcelona gave me the chance to explore the city like a local. I discovered hidden gems, the best restaurants, and secret beaches, all of which made my stay truly special. This move also helped me branch out and meet new people. I became closer with my course mates as we shared this adventure together, and I made lifelong friends with people I had never met before my year abroad. This experience of integrating into a new culture and building new relationships was incredibly rewarding.
Professional experience: Working for a foreign company allowed me to gain valuable experience in the industry I aspire to join post-graduation. I made professional connections that could be useful in the future. Learning from incredible people and acquiring new skills has significantly benefited my career. This practical experience has not only enhanced my resume but also provided me with a deeper understanding of the industry I wish to enter.
What would you say to someone who was unsure about spending a period abroad?
I would say to someone unsure about spending a period abroad that it's an experience that offers unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth. For those that choose to complete an internship like I did, you'll gain invaluable work experience in an international setting which can significantly boost your career prospects. Immersing yourself in a new culture helps enhance language skills and broadens your perspective in ways that classroom learning simply cannot match. Additionally, you'll have the chance to travel, meet new people, and make lifelong friendships. While stepping out of your comfort zone can be daunting, the challenges you face will build resilience and confidence. Ultimately the experience will be enriching and rewarding, providing you with skills that will benefit you for a lifetime. So, take the leap and embrace the adventure - you won't regret it.
What is the one thing you wish you'd known before you left?
The one thing I'd wish I'd known before leaving is that the visa process can be incredibly difficult and costly. Before applying, the University warned us that the process is not easy and involves significant expenses, but it’s hard to grasp the full extent until you go through it yourself. I recommend saving as much as possible before applying for your visa to cover any unforeseen costs.
Despite the challenging process, it’s important to remain positive. Everything will be worth it once you reach your study abroad destination. Moreover, the Global Opportunities team is there to support you through it all; they were incredibly helpful when I struggled with my visa application. Stay focused and remember that the experience will be rewarding in the end!
