Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC)
The Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC) will form part of the University's newly launched Energy Institute, home to more than 300 academics.
Overview
Researchers in the Energy Institute work with industry partners to find solutions to the biggest challenges facing the energy industry. Its research is interdisciplinary with innovation and collaboration at its heart. This enables researchers in the institute to provide sustainable solutions and advice for governments and the energy industry.
Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, Chris Skidmore MP, from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), said: 鈥淐utting edge technology to capture carbon will cut emissions as we work towards a net zero economy, while creating new jobs 鈥 a key part of our modern Industrial Strategy.
鈥淭he Translational Energy Research Centre represents a major milestone in efforts to rollout carbon capture at scale by the 2030s.鈥
Funded by 拢7 million from BEIS and 拢10 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Translational Energy Research Centre will give global companies and new technology start-ups access to advanced testing facilities and the opportunity to collaborate with leading academics in low-carbon energy research.
Through industrial and academic partnerships, this facility will allow experts to develop low carbon technologies which will help power homes, buildings and facilities in the future. Companies will use the research centre to test, optimise and demonstrate their technologies at a commercial-scale.
The TERC facility will be on the Advanced Manufacturing Campus, the site of the previous 91探花 Business Park. The building will be next to Factory 2050 and iCAIR. On the other side of the Parkway is the University of 91探花's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

30 October 2020: Practical completion (handover) has taken place. Contractors JF Finnegan handed over the principal contract to infrastructure specialists Geoffrey Robinson Ltd as the installation of complex, bespoke infrastructure elements becomes the focus for the remainder of 2020 and into early 2021. The building project remains on schedule, with the facility set to open to users in June 2021.

August 2020: Good progress is being made on this new facility with infrastructure connections for equipment being installed.
10 April 2020: Work begins on site under social distancing restrictions.
March 2020: Work is currently suspended on site due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We will keep you updated as the situation changes.
6 February 2020: Soil moved off site and re heaped. Ground levels reduced and hardcore spread and compacted to building base and service yard area. Foundation excavations progressing to main building and concrete poured / steel anchor. Lift foundation base completed.
24 January 2020: We are excavating as well as spreading and compacting stone hardcore. The existing spoil heap is being moved off site and re piled; foundations to the main building are being excavated out.
January 2020: Construction starts on site.
May 2019: Project currently out to tender for the main contractor
13 May 2019: Planning permission approved
19 February 2019: Plans submitted to 91探花 City Council for approval.
