Why I enjoy studying at the SMI
I like my seminars as you are able to learn in-depth about a specific subject and have open debates about different topics to gain greater insights and understand different view points. I enjoy the PPE lectures as we discuss the current economic and political issues we all face today - I've found a real passion for these topics and it's help me decide I want to start my career with the Civil Service after I graduate.
What I enjoyed most about my first few months of study was having the freedom to choose what I wanted to study by picking my own mix of modules.

Politics, Philosophy and Economics BA
Staff are accessible, so you can have open conversations with your lecturers about anything that is bothering you related to your course. What I enjoyed most about my first few months of study was having the freedom to choose what I wanted to study by picking my own mix of modules.
Your first few weeks on the PPE course will start with lectures and seminars and this may feel a bit overwhelming at first, however you'll soon get used to the teaching style, a lot of which may be similar to what you'll have experience at Sixth Form or College.
Here are my three top tips for new Politics, Philosophy and Economics students:
- Join as many societies as possible! as this will help you get out of your comfort zone and meet new people.
- Find out what student travel discounts are available, which will help you easily travel around 91̽»¨.
- Go check out the Peak District, it will help you relax during exam periods - just being out in nature!
