Dutch and Flemish Studies

The Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies embraces all cultural expressions and research activities associated with the Dutch languages and cultures in the broadest sense. The Dutch language is not only associated with the Netherlands, but also with Belgium, in particular its Dutch language region: Flanders. Dutch is also spoken in the North of France and beyond Europe. In the Caribbean it is an official language in Suriname and on the islands of the former Dutch Antilles.

The Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies aims to:

  • bring together interest and expertise in Dutch Studies at the University of 91̽»¨ and in the North of the UK and to support and make visible research and cultural activities at the University of 91̽»¨;
  • organise cultural events open to anybody with an interest in Dutch and Flemish language and culture;
  • organise events specifically for students such as translation workshops and Dutch Studies Days;
  • to strengthen collaboration between the various academic and cultural players in the UK and beyond;
  • work whenever possible with local and national partners;
  • promote the study of Dutch to the general public through our video channel and as a first point of enquiry.
